The Capability Profile is the preschool screening system in Essential that measures cognitive aptitude, behavioral data, and family economic profile to assign a child to one of the surviving professional slots — or to the "facilitation pathway" that leads nowhere.
The Profile is the trilogy's most chilling world-building element. It is not evil. It is efficient. It sorts children into the roles the economy needs, using the data available. The dystopia is not that the system exists; it is that the system has no reason not to exist. If AI does the work, and UBI provides the income, then the only question is who gets to do the remaining work — and the answer is the children who test well at age four.
How the term evolves
Essential: The Capability Profile is the concrete expression of what "people are for" looks like when the answer is "not much." It is the reason Wren Aalto's testimony matters — she is the only person who argues that the Profile should not be the only path.
