Universal Basic Income (UBI) is the institution that defines the world of Essential. After the Squeeze destroyed employment as the basis of the social contract, UBI replaced it — direct cash payments to every citizen, funded by an "innovation tax" on AI revenue.
The trilogy does not treat UBI as utopia. Calder Voss, the billionaire antagonist, calls it "the innovation tax" — a levy on the productive to support the unproductive. Wren Aalto, the Indigenous leader, calls it a leash — a payment that replaces purpose with dependence. Rob Coleman sees it as necessary but insufficient. The political fight is not whether UBI exists but whether it is enough, whether it comes with dignity, and whether the people who receive it have any way to be essential.
How the term evolves
Essential: UBI is the defining institution. The political spectrum runs from Voss (who wants to means-test it) to Wren (who wants to add a care credit on top of it) to Rob (who wants to make sure the systems that deliver it are governed). UBI is not the answer; it is the question.
