Rob Coleman didn't set out to become the person who decides whether AI systems are safe to deploy. He started in FinOps — cloud cost optimization, the part of tech nobody thinks about until the bill arrives. But AI changed what his job meant. First it changed what his team was for. Then it changed whether his team existed at all.
The trilogy follows Rob through three transitions — not just in his career, but in what the world expects from someone standing between the machines and the people they affect.
Redundant — Rob's FinOps team discovers that AI can do what their developers do, faster and cheaper. The question isn't whether to cut. It's how fast. Rob thought he was building a career. Instead he's building the case for why his own team shouldn't exist.
Contingent (set in 2029) — Rob leaves his company and becomes a consultant, telling other companies how to do what was done to his team. The irony isn't lost on him. Neither is the money. But when a sovereign AI standard called Northstar becomes the key to cross-border deployment, the contractors aren't just cost line items anymore. They're leverage.
Essential (set in 2033) — Rob now runs the AI Systems Integrity Office, the agency charged with overseeing the systems that oversee everything else. It's supposed to be oversight. Mostly it's damage control. When a protest movement, a political backlash, and a sovereign AI standard all collide, Rob has to figure out whether he's protecting people from the machines or protecting the machines from the people.
Each book asks a harder question: who gets cut, who gets used, and who gets protected. The answers aren't comfortable — and they're not finished.
The series is written by Tim O'Brien and published by Discursive. The books draw on real dynamics in cloud economics, AI deployment, and labor politics — but they're fiction. The people aren't real. The patterns are.
